Elective Courses

Elective courses may be taken alone or in addition to TIEP’s intensive English classes. They provide instruction in topics which are often of great interest to international students.

Language Skills Enrichment

Conversation & Pronunciation Skills I & II (25 hours)

For students who want to improve their pronunciation and conversational English.Approximately half the course is spent on conversation skills and the other half on pronunciation. Course goals are to improve fluency and speaking competence by learning the vocabulary, expressions, and grammatical forms needed for everyday social communication. Pronunciation will be improved by focusing on vowel and consonant sounds and rhythm, stress, and intonation. Class I is for high-beginning and low-intermediate level students; Class II is for intermediate and high-intermediate level students.

Test Preparation

TOEFL and/or IELTS Preparation (35 hours)

For students with intermediate through advanced level English proficiency who want to take the TOEFL and/or IELTS.  This course may include preparation for IELTS and both the TOEFL iBT and the paper-based Institutional TOEFL, depending on student interest. Course goals are to provide extensive practice in all language skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, writing); to offer systematic analysis of each of the skill areas of the tests; and to teach successful test-taking strategies designed to improve test scores.
